SYSTEM MEETING 4 April 1979
EQUIPMENT
11/45 memory: Zonker memory broken. ROB is consulting with TED.
New Ampex Limbo.
DCA scanner: Still awaiting replacement parts. Contacted John Alderman at
DCA, who said he would try to come up with replacement parts
in the next month.
Ampex Discs: LLL & DEK drives returned from El Segundo. DEK (Drive H) seems
to work, LLL (Drive G) doesn't -- probably a head alignment problem.
Ampex promises to do something about it on 6 April - ME & ROB.
9-track tapes: Limbo - LES.
Datamedias: Some promised "soon" - LES.
UDS modems: Installed with new phone lines today - LES.
Varian Plotter: TED's interface design completed, 75% wrapped - ROB.
PROGRAMS
WAITS: March availability 95% -- only 5 software crashes during the month.
10-year-old line editor bug fixed -- used to crash the system.
Remote displays may now have higher and wider screens - ME.
FIND: Replaced by newer and more flexible program -- READ FIND for
complete documentation - DON.
RUMORS
Lab move: A plan is developing to split the Music and Computer Science
components of the Lab, with separate computer facilities for each.
The main alternatives that currently exist are:
(a) move the whole Lab to Jacks Hall, as planned, then move
the Music Group out later, after suitable computer computer
facilities have been acquired, possibly back to the Power
Lab;
(b) acquire suitable facilities for the split before the move,
then move just the Computer Science component to campus.
Alternative (b) appears to be more attractive to most parties, but
lead times for some needed components and software mods would
likely force a delay in the currently scheduled move date (June 15).
There was a consensus of those at the meeting that if there is a
delay, it should be until at least early August, because of assorted
commitments in July.
The key unresolved issue in all of this is the source of funds
needed for extra hardware needed to effect the split. Planning
cannot proceed until a source is identified - LES.
